I don’t know who it is, but SOMEONE is deliberately siphoning coolant out of my reservoir . I’m sure of it. Now whoever is doing this, would you please, kindly return my coolant?

Jokes aside, I’ve been having this intermittent issue with my Camry, where the coolant reservoir will suddenly go empty. The first time I noted this happening, was on August 23rd. On that day, I popped the hood to check my oil and noticed the coolant reservoir was bone dry. I opened up the radiator cap and to my surprise, it was very low as well. I was shocked, because I pop the hood every other week to check the oil and the last time I did that, it was still full.

Needless to say, when I saw that, I added coolant to the reservoir, up to the “cold” full line and topped off the radiator.

Fast forward to yesterday, I popped the hood and noticed the reservoir was very, very low, yet again! Just last week, the reservoir was still at the full mark, so I don’t understand how it just suddenly gets that low!

In a previous post, (exactly one week ago, actually), I mentioned that spot of coolant in the driveway.... I checked the coolant that same day, and it was still at the “ full” mark!

So where did all of that coolant suddenly vanish to?

And no, the coolant tank is not cracked, I checked that first. That has been replaced not too long ago.

It went right through your blown headgasket?

In my case, it was usually the connections at the heater core. Those are often so high up in the engine bay, a lot can leak out before it ever hits the ground (a lot of it evaporates before leaving the engine bay , since it can pool under the hood in various spots).

Good luck! Worst case, check your oil cap for sludge. That’s the only other place coolant can disappear...

was it green? hot? liquidy?

I seent it on a highway. It was sticking to someone’s tires... being all.... rude n stuff...

Forget that coolant. Get a new one. Nice clean cold coolant...

oh, I sure hope not! No sludge under the oil cap, and the oil looks delightful.

oh shoot! Didn’t think about that. Heater core would probably make the most sense..

Eh, I’m just going to grab a bottle of green Gatorade and dump it into my coolant tank . I mean, Gatorade is a “thirst quencher”. Therefore it should quench the Camry’s thirst for coolant.

I forgot to mention another worst case (not as bad as the first) -- check the carpet in the front footwells. If the heater core itself is leaking, that’s where you’ll find it.

What year Camry and what engine? The 02-06 Camrys with the 2.4L 4 cylinder (2AZ-FE) engine have a known weak spot in the block . ( See TSB-0015-11 .) If I recall correctly, it’s the middle three head bolts. The aluminum in that part of the block is weak and the bolts pull the threads out .

https://www.toyotanation.com/threads/official-2002-2006-camry-2-4-liter-2azfe-stripped-head-bolt-thread.325124/page-2

That thread also includes information on how to fix it. There are some specialized kits that include thread inserts, the proper size drill bit and tap, and a jig to ensure you drill the holes in perfectly straight.

Mine always stays maybe an inch above the bottom regardless of how much gets added. No chocolate milk oil changes or that very distinct smell. Car seems happy at running temp so

I had a plastic elbow that was leaking slow enough that it never pooled anywhere, but it finally broke and blew coolant everywhere under the hood, but no trace beforehand.
